A research study on the Emotional Processes in Online Parent Learning
What is the purpose of this study?
Many parents today depend on online resources (e.g., online workshops, videos, articles) to help with challenges in parenting. Sometimes, the same resources can be helpful and empowering to some parents, yet be unhelpful and de-motivating to others. We are conducting a study to learn about thoughts and feelings parents have when they attend an online parenting workshop, and how these may affect learning. By participating in this study, you will be helping us understand what helps or hinders parent’s learning online, and how we can develop more effective and useful learning resources for parents. Information gathered within this workshop will be used for the doctoral dissertation of co-investigator, Angela Low.
What do participants have to do?
We are asking parents to complete a free online parenting workshop and survey. Using your own laptop, smartphone or tablet, complete the self-paced online workshop (approx. 30 minutes) and answer some questions before, during and after (10-20 minutes) whenever it is convenient for you.
This is a unique opportunity to attend, at no cost to you, an online parenting workshop on emotional intelligence developed and presented by Angela Low (co-investigator) and the Social and Emotional Education and Development lab at the University of British Columbia. Angela studies emotional intelligence and child development, and has been developing educational resources and facilitating workshops for parents and youth for well over a decade in China and Canada. In Vancouver, she works with the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education, YWCA, YMCA, VPL, and various school districts to integrate Social and Emotional Learning into community programs.
Tell me more about the workshop!
Workshop Title: Mind the Heart- Supporting children's emotional well-being with emotional intelligence during challenging times
This 30-minute workshop provides parents with practical strategies for handling difficult moments with their child with emotional intelligence. With families spending more time together and apart from others in this uncertain COVID-era, studies show that adults and children are experiencing a wide range of unpleasant emotions like anxiety, anger, frustration, stress and boredom. The self-paced workshop will provide you with 6 evidence-based parenting strategies designed to help you de-escalate challenging moments with your child, strengthen your relationships with them, and help them build their social and emotional skills... important ingredients for being resilient in difficult times!
Sounds good. Any other perks?
At the end of the survey, you will receive a link to download a 12-page toolkit for emotionally intelligent parenting AND enter into a draw for 30 CAD $50 Amazon Gift cards, as a way of thanking you for your time. You can also request a summary of the results of this study.
Who can participate?
Any parent or caregiver of children ages 3 through 16 can take part.
Can I have a few more details, please?
Upon joining, you will be asked to provide some basic demographic information and to respond to questions about being a parent. You will then watch a video of Angela introducing the workshop and a short reflection activity, followed by an animated video about strong emotions in parenting. There will be some questions to answer followed by a presentation of 6 strategies for handling difficult parenting moments with emotional intelligence. At the end, you will be asked further questions about the workshop and your experience of it. The total length of your participation is expected to be around 45-50 minutes.
Your participation is confidential - the information you provide will not be shared or used for purposes other than this research.
